I will describe the evolution during 30 years of high pressure diffraction experiments in diamond anvil cells at the ESRF, from energy dispersive to monochromatic diffraction at ID9A, till state of the art single crystal diffraction experiments with micrometre size beam and hybrid pixel detectors at ID15B. Some key experiments will be portrayed, their results will be highlighted.
