Gail Ferguson has been awarded the Royal Society grant 'Understanding high pressure-adapted growth of the marine bacterium, Photobacterium profundum' (February 2005). The project will focus on the role of the lipopolysaccharide, a component of the outer membrane, in high-pressure adapted growth. Funding will also help develop screens to isolate pressure sensitive mutants of Photobacterium. Research will provide insights into the molecular basis of high pressure-adapted growth in marine bacteria.
