January 2009 - Funding boost for studies of pressure-sensitive complex formation

Funding boost for studies of pressure-sensitive complex formation (January 2009). EPSRC has awarded £1.1M funding to the Pressure-sensitive complex formation based on self-assembling ligands proposal by Dr. Anita Jones, Dr. Konstantin Kamenev, Prof. Simon Parsons and Prof. Peter Tasker. Salicylaldoximes and related ligands are important in metal extraction processes, being used in the extraction of some 20% of the world's copper. They self-assemble into H-bonded dimers, creating pseudo-macrocyclic rings which can accommodate metal cations. The aim of this project is to explore the scope for using pressure to tune the extraction properties of salicylaldoximes towards specific metals.
