Dr. Helen Maynard-Casely wins a poster prize at the EHPRG meeting in Paris (September 2009). The poster she presented reported on the full (carbon and hydrogen) determination of the structure of methane A and was one of only three selected for an award. From the single crystal x-ray studies it has been proposed that the methane A has a ‘distorted close packed’ structure closely related to the cubic closed packed (ccp) methane I. With neutron powder-diffraction the hydrogen atom positions have been identified, and from rigid body refinement the structure was found to be ordered and to have R3 symmetry.
