Research Interests
I am interested in the physical properties of solids under high pressure, which I study with x-ray diffraction and x-ray diffuse scattering in combination with ab initio electronic structure calculations.
- Pure elements: Numerous elements have been found to adopt high-pressure phases with extremely complex crystal structures. I have studied their physical properties and the mechanisms that stabilise these exotic elemental phases.
- Thermoelectric materials: I aim to understand why some thermoelectric materials show dramatic enhancements in their properties at high pressure, to help create better-performing thermoelectrics.
- Technique development: I develop and adapt methods for analysing single-crystal X-ray diffuse scattering data to determine phonon dispersion relations in materials under high pressure.
