Abstract
Silicate melts are thought to exist locally in Earth's lower mantle and may play an important role in mantle dynamics and geophysical observations. Because direct measurements of silicate melts at lower mantle conditions remain experimentally challenging, silicate glasses are commonly used as structural analogues.
In this seminar, I will present recent high-pressure studies on iron-bearing silicate glasses using several experimental techniques. I will discuss the pressure dependence of the elastic properties of pyroxene glasses investigated by Brillouin scattering and inelastic X-ray scattering. I will also introduce high-pressure electrical conductivity measurements on pyroxene and peridotite glasses, focusing on the influence of the iron spin transition on electrical conductivity.
These studies provide new insights into the physical properties of iron-bearing silicate glasses and their implications for silicate melts in Earth's lower mantle.
